Asante Kotoko and Ash Gold African opponents revealed

Asante Kotoko and Ash Gold opponents in 2020/2021 Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively have been revealed following a draw by CAF on Monday in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

Kotoko represent Ghana in the Champions League with seemingly tricky clash against Mauritanian side in preliminary round of the competition handed down by the continent’s football governing body.

The Ghana Premier League outfit will travel to the Africa’s Atlantic Coast to face Nouadhibou for the competition’s first leg on 27-29 November before hosting the Eight-time Mauritanian league champions at the Accra Sports Stadium a week later.

Whiles Kotoko have won a record 23 times of the Ghana Premier League, Nouadhibou have won Eight titles of the Mauritian top flight league with their latest one coming just last season.

The Mauritania top side accumulated 57 points with 18 victories, 3 draws and 5 defeats. They scored a higher 40 goals, two more goals than the second highest scoring sides Nouadkchott King’s and Tidjikjaand and the leaders conceded 16 times, one of the second clubs to concede fewer number of goals this season.

However, Kotoko was placed third on the 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League table, in a season that was finally cancelled from an indefinite suspension due to crisis from the coronavirus pandemic. The 2-time CAF Champions League winners recorded 7 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses.

Winners between Kotoko and Nouadhibou will face winner of clash between Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman and Vipers from Uganda in first round in December if nothing chances. Last season, Hilal failed to qualify out of group B that consisted of Etoile Sportive du Sahel, Al Ahly and FC Platinum Stars, with second placed Ahly now reaching this season’s champions League final with Zamalek.

Hilal enter this competition after placing second on last season’s Sudanese Premier League table with 69 points while seeing Al Merriekh whiles Vipers were also crowned champions of the Ugandan top flight league as they enter into Africa for second time a row.

In the Confederation Cup, another Ghana Premier League side Ash Gold will face Burkina Faso giants Salitas FC and stand chances of a tie against El Amal of Sudan or KVZ FC from Zanzibar late this year or early next year in the first round of CAF’s second tier Inter Club football.

In last season’s edition, the Obuasi based club were eliminated by winners RB Berkane on 4-3 aggregate score line in the second  round and will be hoping to progress beyond in this season’s competition

Berkane beat Pyramids 2-0 October this year to emerge winners of the Confederation Cup for the first time in their history.

As preparation for their awaiting continental assignment, Ash Gold will start the 2020/ 2021 Ghana Premier League with a home game against Karela United on Sunday 15th November 2020.
