South Africa beat Ethiopia 3-1 in Second Round of Africa World Cup qualifiers for 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The victory takes South Africa to 7 points on top of Group G in their third game after drawing in their opener and beating Ghana in second game and Ethiopia today.
The second consecutive victory now boost South Africa chances of progressing to the next qualifying phase but they have much to do when they face Black Stars in Ghana in November which can be a decider of the qualifiers.
Ethiopia swept away South Africa in possession in the first half at Bahir Dar Stadium. The home side were all over the pitch forcing South Africa to chase shadows in accumulated 66%- 34% possession.
South Africa didn’t break from their spirit remaining intact and finally took the lead from a free kick in first half as Teboho Mokoena direct kick went into the posts and resulted in big mistake from Ethiopian goalkeeper.
Ethiopia nearly drew level on 55’ minute after their no.8 shirt send in a powerful shot that missed the post by inches. Early minutes into the first half they should have taken the lead but missed a couple of decent chances; some South Africa goalkeeper needs to be commended for providing solid saves.
Ethiopia leveled in the second half after Getaneh Kebede scored from a beautiful free kick into the top left corner. South African restored their lead with a strike from Mothobi Mvala on 71’ minute mark before Evidence Makgopa sealed the 3-1 victory in stoppage time.
South Africa will host Ethiopia on Tuesday and a win will heighten their World Cup final chances.
