The market popularized as ‘Dubai’ was hit by high volume fire outbreak on Wednesday afternoon when business was in progress.
With that business hours, just imagine how much loss the fire has incured as thousands of stores packed with goods and money burnt while considerable figure of traders collapsed from smoke inhalation.
Though rescue team, Ghana National Fire Service, faced huge challenge to control the fire outbreak but there were narrowed roots to salvage the situation as rope was placed for traders and store owners to fly on.
While some traders run for their lives, other shop owners were busy collecting their goods and were hit with smoke. Unconfirmed reports claim that some store owners collpased as a results of the smoke and were rushed to nearby health facilities.
Initial reports about the fire had failed to give accurate cause of the incident with some claiming a suspected unhealthy explosion activity came into contact with Gas sparking and spreading the outbreak.
In other reports, the fire was set from the vehice tires side that spread across the market. An eye witness- a man who was at the exact place where the fire started spoke with Joy News after the outbreak has devasted the scene.
The man claimed that the fire started at the carbide vendors. At that zone was one particular shop where a woman has plugged a radio and her electric socket was surrounded with packed goods.
Overheating caused fire inside the socket and smoke coming out that is where the fire began, the man said. There was collision of electric wires coming into contact with the carbides and it exploded.
The explosion that was close to the tires vendors further caused the fire to spread faster, the man claimed.
“The area where she had plugged the radio was where the smoke started from. She had arranged so many things around the electric socket.
“The lady is on the same lane with the carbide vendors. The carbide got in contact with the fire and caused an explosion,” he added. This is an eye witness view with city officials yet to issue out the main cause of the outbreak on Wednesday.
As it stands, no deaths and injuries have been confirmed but local reports give a confidence for death free situation after people inside the market were able to run for their lives.
This outbreak is the first to hit the market since its opening in 2016 after Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama commissioned the business arena in 2016- reportedly the largest market in West Africa.
Since the completion of the market, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development promised that market women and men will be left free of the situation where they lost properties, money and belongings through fire outbreak.
But it has been less than a decade where his promise has been defeated under the ultra-modern facility that should resist such occurrences after unsuspected fire burnt the Kejetia market on Wednesday 15th March 2023.
To save the fire from further spreading, pure waters were used and failed to stop the high outbreak. A rope was placed for people and store owners to be rescued. But according to eye witness report, a women with his baby at her back in that attempt landed forcefully suggesting she might have sustained an injury.
Video footages show a huge smoke covering the surrounding of the market with flames visible from several kilometers away making saving lives difficult.
Many people inside the market were seen rushing from the top as they attempted to rescue themselves with trained rescue team trapped under poor working conditions.
With the whole market project in phases, the second phase at the location of the former famous Central Market is still under construction and is the fire outbreak untouched.
