Jimmy Carter to lie in state at US Capitol as state funeral observed for longest-lived US president

Former US president Jimmy Carter’s body will lie in state in US Capitol in Washington DC on Tuesday, for two days, to mark US observation state funeral for the longest-lived president in American history.

On Saturday, first funeral was held for the departed democracy and human rights activist at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanata, in a service hundreds of members of the public came to pay their respects.

On Tuesday, Carter’s body departed the centre one last time and is being taken to the US Capitol, where members of the US Congress will come to pay their respects.

At the Capitol, Carter’s body will lie in state for two days, during which period the public can once again come to pay their respects.

Carter died on Sunday 29 December, 2024 at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family, confirmed by a center he founded Carter Center.

One of Carter’s children Chip Carter shared an emotional message about the death at his father’s centre in Atlanta, telling how a hero the former peanut farmer to people worldwide who seek peace, human rights and unselfish love.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

The 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner died at the age of 100 as the longest-lived US President.

Public observances were held in states Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private interment in Plains, Georgia to commemorate Carter’s death.

The Democrat served as president from 1977 to 1981, a period beset by economic and diplomatic crises.
