Qatar Airways buys 25% stake in South African carrier Airlink

Qatar Airways has acquired a 25% stake in the privately owned South African carrier Airlink.

The announcement was made Tuesday as the deal between the Asian and Africa airlines seek to boost services and passenger numbers across Africa.

Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer, speaking alongside Airlink’s CEO Rodger Foster in Doha, told reporters the investment would boost Qatar Airways’ access to passengers in regional cities in Africa.
Foster said it would allow privately owned Airlink to expand in Africa and eventually to operate larger aircraft on one or two routes. It would not expand beyond Africa, he said.

No financial details of the deal were immediately disclosed but deal would require regulatory approval.

Airlink flies to more than 45 destinations in southern and East Africa. The deal will enhance an existing code-share agreement between the airlines, they said.

“Our investment further demonstrates how integral we see Africa being to our business’ future,” the CEO of the Qatari state-owned carried said.

Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Harare, Luanda and Lusaka are among the African cities newly added to the extensive Qatar Airways network.
