English-born Ghanaian defender Sean Clare completes move to Wigan Athletic

English-born Ghanaian defender Sean Clare has completed a move to English League One side Wigan Athletic FC on a three-year deal.

The League One side had been tracking Sean Clare since the opening of this summer’s transfer window and now have one of the best right-backs in Sky Bet League One last term.

The defender has signed a 3-year deal until 2026 as Wigan Athletic confirm the deal on the website.

“Wigan Athletic is pleased to confirm the signing of versatile defender Sean Clare on a three-year deal. Clare joins after a two-year spell with Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One, where he played over 75 league games.

“The 26-year-old, who has over 200 career appearances to his name, operates predominantly on the right-hand side, though he is versatile, athletic and capable of playing at full-back, wing-back and in the heart of midfield.

“Born in Hackney, Clare spent his early years with the Addicks and the Nike Academy, before signing permanently for Sheffield Wednesday in February 2016. He joined Bury on loan one month later, and it was with the Shakers that he made his professional breakthrough.”

Clare left Charlton Athletic at the end of last season after failing to agree a new deal following expiration of his 2-year period with the League One side. He joins Wigan on a free transfer.

“It’s a massive club with great ambition, and I feel I’m in a great position to help us progress,” he said after completion of the deal.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the fans. I know they always get behind the team, and from everything that I have seen and heard it should be an exciting season”

Clare is a Charlton Athletic youth product and was sent out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in 2016. He has played for Heart of Midlothian, Oxford United and Burton before coming back to Charlton Athletic in 2021.

Clare helped Heart of Midlothian to reach Scottish Cup final losing 2-1 to Celtic in 2019. He played 92 games in all competitions for Charlton over the past two seasons.

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney said, “We are delighted that Sean has joined the Football Club on a three-year contract. Sean is a fantastic addition to our team, due to his technical ability, versatility and his personality.

“At 26, he is very experienced in this league but I’m convinced Sean has the potential to develop into an important player at even higher levels.”

“Sean was our first choice in this position so it’s a big positive for the Club and the team that we have been able to convince Sean that we are at the start of our journey.

“I wish him the best of luck and success at our Football Club.”

Clare’s signing will now serve as an excellent reinforcement for Maloney’s side in their bid to secure a quick qualification back to the EFL Championship next season after suffering demotion in the 2022/23 term.

The London-born defender remains eligible to switch allegiance and play for Ghana on the international stage.
