BREAKING- Helicopter crashes into field in North Yorkshire in England

Police have urged the public to avoid the area.

A helicopter has crashed into a field in a village in North Yorkshire, according to police.

Emergency services are at the scene of the incident off Bentham Road, near Burton in Lonsdale, North Yorkshire Police said.

The incident occurred shortly before midday and people have been “strongly urged” to avoid the area.

The cause of the crash – and whether anyone has been injured – are currently unknown.

Burton is a farming area near the border with Lancashire and Cumbria.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it “dispatched a number of resources to the scene” but gave no further details.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service also attended the incident.

Residents of nearby village Ingleton on social media discussed seeing black smoke in the area and large numbers of emergency services.

Business manager Ben Slinger told local newspaper the Craven Herald that locals were told there was a pilot and at least one passenger onboard the helicopter before it crashed into the field.

“It certainly looked like (emergency services) were looking for somebody. We could see the fire brigade searching the fields.”

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) say they have launched an investigation into what happened and inspectors were on their way to the crash site to start making enquiries.
