Former president of Ghana John Dramani Mahama has win presidential election becoming the country’s new president-elect though the Election Commission has not yet make official confirmation, which likely Tuesday.
Mahama will replace Akufo Addo as Ghana’s new president from 2025 to 2029.
Voting in Ghana begun Saturday morning 07:00pm GMT and ended 05:00pm GMT. The electoral authority body followed with constituency votes counting at its various collation centers at late Saturday night where many voters and the media slept overnight to witness counting and await results trend for the presidential polls.
Vote counting is still ongoing but initial results that consist majority of constituency results indicate a significant lead for main opposition National Democratic Congress party candidate and former president of Ghana John Dramani Mahama.
Ruling New Patriotic Party party candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has conceded defeat in a press conference Sunday morning.
“The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility,” Bawumia told the media flanked by party officials.
Dramani Mahama has not spoken publicly about his historic victory but the in-coming president elect in an X post says he has received a congratulatory phone call from Vice President Bawumia.
Mahama entered a tricky presidential contest with Bawumia whose economic background has led to ruling NPP’s myriad economic initiatives including digitalization but a country’s economy already plagued and affected by global economic crisis failed to absorb NPP’s digitalization policy.
However, the elections was dominated by economic woes- on this wheel had NDC organized and backed some pressure groups in protests to make the ruling government unpopular. Prior national opinion poll by Global infoAnalytic predicted a 51.2% win for Mahama who came into this presidential election for a third consecutive attempt.
NDC’s initial internal results showed the party’s wayward victory from the opinion poll figure. The party’s spokesperson Sammy Gyamfi said the party’s internal review of results showed Mahama had won 56.3% of the vote, against 41.3% for Bawumia.
Mahama’s 2025 victory finally ends Akufo Addo’s 8-year administration but seems to be fallen by Ghana’s worst economic crises in a generation. Mahama, who has already ruled the country for one term from 2013-2017, would be challenged to deal with the current economic problems and then eradicate memories of his government’s financial problems marked by massive power cuts.
