Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher slams Man United £70million signing of Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro

Jamie Carragher has questioned Manchester United’s £70million signing of Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.

The 30-year-old was paraded at Old Trafford ahead of the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool on Monday night and is seen as the solution to Erik ten Hag’s midfield issues.

However Liverpool legend Carragher has criticised United’s recruitment under the Glazer family, while shooting down comparisons between the Red Devils and Arsenal.

Writing in The Telegraph, Carragher said: ‘United are persisting with their policy of pursuing established stars for big money and huge salaries, regardless of whether they have no sell-on fee.

‘Casemiro may succeed where others have failed at Old Trafford. His recruitment still smacks of short-termism and is the opposite of how [Mikel] Arteta has decided to use his resources, albeit he too has spent big.’

There is a fresh air of optimism surrounding the Gunners this term. The north London side made the shrewd signings of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira, while remaining unbeaten in pre-season.

And Arteta’s side have started the season in a similar vein, as they currently sit top of the Premier League table after victories in their opening three games.

Carragher added: ‘Year upon year, Arteta has gone about shifting the older, high earners from his squad; from Mezut Ozil to David Luiz and, more recently, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexander Lacazette.

‘Removing players with big reputations on high wages was never going to be achieved overnight.

‘Nor was it going to be done without criticism given high profile stars are always going to have an army of backers presenting them as being disrespected.’
