Dries Mertens interested in making move to CHELSEA after Frank Lampard talks

Dries Mertens is interested in a switch to London after being in contact with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, according to reports.

The Napoli star’s contract expires this summer and Chelsea are one of several clubs chasing his signature.

Lampard failed in a bid to sign Mertens last January, but has continued his push to convince the Belgian to join Chelsea since then.

The Daily Mail claim Mertens is keen on a move to London, which will be a big boost to Chelsea’s efforts to lure him to Stamford Bridge.

Mertens, however, does have several offers on the table ahead of the next transfer window.

Arsenal were also linked with Mertens during the winter window, but passed on the chance to sign him due to his age.

Mertens turns 33 next week, but the forward continues to be an excellent source of goals for Napoli with 12 strikes in 29 appearances this season.

Lampard views Mertens as an excellent addition to his forward line due to his versatility.

It is only in recent years that Mertens has played as a centre-forward having previously plied his trade on left wing for Napoli.

Lampard was eager to make several signings this summer before the coronavirus pandemic cast doubt over the upcoming window.

A left-back, striker and centre-back were on the agenda for Chelsea, but it is now unclear if the window will go ahead as planned as the Premier League aim to play postponed games this summer.

Most Premier League clubs are expected to redraft their transfer plans due to the financial strain caused by the health crisis.
