If this happens, identification of reps to next season’s CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup would be somehow a challenge for the Ghana Football Association.

However, Kofi Manu who is well vested with knowledge about rules and regulation governing football in domestic and the continental landscape has tipped Asante Kotoko and Ash Gold to be the qualified candidates to represent Ghana in African next season.

“If the league is cancelled then this is simple, Asante Kotoko and Ash Gold will represent Ghana in Africa,” Manu told Happy FM.

“When Kotoko and Charles Kwabla Akunnor had a case, the Tier I competition was considered as the league by the ruling in CK AKunnor’s case and also to CAF.

“As it stands now Kotoko is the last season’s winner and according to the CAF rule the previous season’s winner can represent the country in the CAF competition.

“That is the same rule Kotoko used in participating in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup”, he noted.

Manu’s revelation is not based not personnel interest but special attention was given to CAF rule that reflects if country for a reason or two fail to produce reps in CAF Inter Cub competitions (which in many instances winners of a country’s league and domestic cup), those winners of the league and/or domestic cup(s) of the previous season- (in many cases last season) should represent the country in CAF Inter Club competitions.

Kotoko and Ash Gold now satisfy this CAF criteria where the former won the tier I and the latest won tier II of Normalization Committee special competition played last season.

The GFA already set forth before the start of the NC competition that the winner of the tier I represent Ghana in the Champions League whiles the winner of tier II play the Confederation Cup.

As it stands now, and if the 2019-2020 season is finally cancelled, and to go strictly by the above CAF rule, Asante Kotoko will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League whilst Ash Gold represent in the Confederation Cup.

However, the GFA and CAF can also use other approaches and criteria to identify qualified clubs to Africa next season.

And a typical option is CAF to deploy ‘points build-up’ in inter club competitions in recent years (in many cases last five years).

If CAF finally decides to go by this approach, Aduana Stars, Medeama Sporting Club and Asante Kotoko stand high chance into Africa club competitions for the 2020-2021 season.
