Autonomisation of the Ghana Premier League as GFA announces decision

The Ghana Football Association has announced a decision to make the Ghana Premier League an autonomous entity. The Premier League is organized and managed by the GFA since the start of the competition back in 1956 season.

The league has run by GFA its body of Premier League Board (PLB), however, with the GFA undergoing a series of administrative changes after period of bribery and corruption scandals,   the PLB has been replaced by Premier League Management Committee since last years, a current GFA statutory body, to deal with the organization and management of the Ghana League.

With the transition eventually not ending in a bid to re-develop Ghana football, with larger emphasis on domestic football to a more professional, competitive and attractive level, the autonomisation of the Ghana Premier League has been regarded necessary.

Autonomy which does not mean the League will be free from overall laws that govern the game of football but that means the competition will be run as independently as it may be from the GFA’s organization and management rights or mandate.

To complete the autonomisation of the Ghana Premier League, the GFA has to, in a way or somehow, transfer its rights or power to an independent body, which in this case may include Premier League clubs to subsequently see the management, organization and commercial independence of the professional league.

The Ghana Football Association met on Tuesday to deliberate on the preconception of granting the Premier League autonomous status, and the outcome of the meeting gave birth to a GFA announcement finally confirming the decision to make the league autonomous.

Premier League Autonomy Committee can be seen in the autonomisation process as “big five” football clubs in England (Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton and Arsenal), who first met with London Weekend Television and agreed with, in Premier League’s decision to broke away from the The Football League in the early 90s.
