Asante Kotoko set to battle Hearts of Oak for Great Olympics star Gladson Awako

Asante Kotoko may open a new quest to battle Hearts of Oak for signature of Great Olympics star Galdon Awako in this January transfer window according latest reports.

The Great Olympics play-maker has impressed in the Ghanaian capital though the general stats speak average of the Ghanaian International but from technical point of view, he is one of the outstanding gem in the local scene this season so far.

In light, the former Hearts of Lions has clinched the best Player for Month of December having been applauded with four Man Of The Match awards in that period.

Awako was once linked with a move to Asante Kotoko especially in his time with Dr. Congo giants TP Mazembe but after deciding to return to the Ghana Premier League, the 30-year old snubbed Kotoko for Olympics.

Meanwhile, Awako first moved outside the Ghana Premier League to join Mazembe from Berekum Chelsea after The Ravens announced a deal in January 2013.

Awako won the Dr Congo Premier League title three times and the ultimate the Caf Champions League once in 2015 but later failed to reach new agreement with the Dr Congo champions following expiration of the Ghanaian’s contract in 2017.

On return to Ghana career, the former TP Mazembe star has grabbed 4 goals/3 assists coupled with some entertaining displays in 8 Ghana Premier League games therefore attracting interest from Ghana Premier League duo Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

Both clubs are understood to be interested and have even scouted the player since start of this season. Hearts of Oak are limited in squad in-depth especially as far as creativity in middle of the pitch is concern with the Accra based side relying heavily on Abdul Omar Manaf.

Asante Kotoko face similar situation who were even worst of the creativity problem until Brazilian ace Fabio Gama broke into the scene in recent Ghana Premier League tie against Liberty Professionals to give the Porcupine Warriors new hope in attacking sense.

With both clubs knee on strengthening their creativity department this January, Awako who is one of the best attacking midfielders emerges as a stronger candidate. Hearts of Oak are reportedly favorites to land Awako after the player himself declaring his affection for the Accra based side, however he did not ruled out a move to Kotoko.

“I have always been a Hearts fan. Even when we were in the academy at Goldfields I supported Hearts.

“Playing for Kotoko won’t be an issue. Emmanuel Osei Kufuor was a Kotoko fan but always excelled against them so I wouldn’t mind playing for them. If an offer comes and it is good for Olympics and myself, why not?”, Awako told reporters a day after his Olympics’ slim Ghana Premier League loss at home to Ash Gold.

Hearts of Oak have reportedly started attempt to lure Awako after club’s hierarchy and head coach Kosta Papic discussing the suitability of the Ghanaian International in Hearts’ setup as official bid to Great Olympics could be launched in coming days.

Kotoko are unsatisfactory of Hearts’ attempt on Awako and have decided to battle their rivals for Ghanaian’s signature. The Kumasi based side are believed confident of a deal for Awako after the play-maker failed to ruled them out in the race and would act upon Awako’s words by prizing him away from Olympics this January or at end of this season.

Awako beat off competition from Techiman Eleven Wonders’ Salifu Ibrahim, Augustine Boakye from WAFA and Elmina Sharks forward Benjamin Tweneboah to win the December Player of the Month.
