Charles Kwablan Akonnor has now on Wednesday been appointed as the new head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana.
Ghana parted ways with former boss Akwesi Appiah on the second day of the New Year after the two parties failed to agree on a contract extension, and a search for Appiah’s replacement has forever since been initiated.
The search was primarily backed by government’s preference for a Ghanaian coach instead that put the former Black Stars captain Akonnor ahead of other foreign gaffers in the pegging order.
Though he was not the only Ghanaian coach considered by the GFA as possible replacement for Akwesi Appiah.
However, his recent spells with Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko and as assistant coach of the Black Stars played a major role in his new appointment.
The GFA confirmed the appointment in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon that reads,
“The Ghana Football Association has appointed Charles Kwabla Akonnor as Head Coach of the Senior National team, the Black Stars. The former Black Stars captain will be assisted by David Duncan as Assistant Coach.”
The former Ash Gold boss was the man who led Asante Kotoko to the group stages of the 2018-2019 CAF Confederation, an achievement the Ghanaian side had failed to accomplish in about 10 years before.
The gaffer returned quickly right after their Confederation Cup exit to clinch the 2019 Normalization Committee Special Competition before he joined the Black Stars as assistant coach in November 2019.
