Covid-19: Suspensions in Ghana football continues as GFA closes all offices due to coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic is having a major say in the daily operations of individuals, events and institutions.

The death toll of the outbreak has seen many events across the world postponed. Now it’s the turn of the offices of the Ghana Football Association to see the unfavorable impact of the deadly pandemic after the Ghanaian football governing body announced closure for its offices.

The GFA announced suspension for all football in Ghana last Sunday following the Presidential declaration to suspend all sporting activities few minutes earlier.

Despite suspending football activities, the GFA offices were in the open to run its daily administrative functions. On Thursday evening however, the FA finally decided to close all its headquarters and regional offices until further notice as a result of the coronavirus.

In a statement, “Ghana Football Association (GFA) has closed its offices until further notice because of Coronavirus concerns.

“Members of the GFA including clubs, Regional Football Associations (and many more) are being reminded to use the online systems of the GFA (email, Registration System – FIFA Connect) to communicate with the Secretariat until the offices reopen.

“The GFA will continue to engage with the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service on the next steps and inform our staff and stakeholders accordingly of any changes.

“This is part of the precautionary measures being undertaken by the Executive Council of the GFA to curb the spread of the pandemic.

“The GFA is also reminding clubs that are still engaged in training to desist with immediate effect and fully respect the directive from H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo–Addo.

Ghana have seen a sharp increase its incidence of the disease, from 2 confirmed cases last Sunday to 16 on Friday morning 20th March, 2020. This rise put Ghana as one of the fast growing countries in Africa in relation to the spread of the covid-19.

The Word Health Organization (WHO) has already labeled African countries to prepare for ‘Extremely Rapid Evolution of Covid-19’, and given this trend Ghana have put on, the country could have a major foot stepping into WHO’s statement.

Meanwhile, there is a line of hope for Ghanaians as there is allegedly 8 recoveries from the previous 11 confirmed cases until today’s 5 new additional cases.

The GFA and its clubs including but not limited to Legon Cities Football Club and Asante Kotoko have already lighten up steps in help to prevent the spread of the covid-19.
