Medeama stuns Asante Kotoko 2-0 at Baba Yara Stadium

Medeama Sporting Club stuns Asante Kotoko 2-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Sunday’s late kickoff.

Both teams entered the game with making it two in a row in sight but Kotoko’s hopes were immediately dent by the visitors.

A goal from each half of the game was enough to give Medeama a deserving 2-0 victory over Asante Kotoko in Kumasi. Kotoko have been fighting to defend their Ghana Premier League title but fluctuation of results have caused the league champions this season.

After winning 2-1 at Samatex and coming home this time, nothing but a win was the priority. But Medeama took the lead that might have broke the Reds’ heart and their assistant coach Orlando Wellington who is hoping to impress on short term following Seydou Zerbo’s sideline due to family issues.

The Burkina Faso International has traveled back to his homeland to be with his family following death of his younger son after loss to Hearts of Oak.  Wellington led Kotoko to victory in his first game at Samatex but has been beaten at home by title rivals Medeam Sporting Clubfter Vincent Atinga scored the second goal in the other half of the game.

Prior to the game Medeama had tied on same points with Asante Kotoko 34 each with the Tarkwah side a place above Kotoko on the Ghana Premier League standings. Asante Kotoko were placed 6th position while Medeama sat 5th and the defeat today see them moved back two places sliming their chances to get Africa football next season.

Ghanaian clubs who go to Africa are MTN FA Cup and league champions for the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League respectively. With Asante Kotoko already crushed out of the FA Cup by Aduana Stars, a place in the CAF Confederation has been ruled out with their only remaining hopes on winning the league to book a place in the Africa Champions League next season.

But this one too has become difficult for Seydou Zerbo’s side with their results something they need to address as soon as possible to brighten their title defense chances.

Asante Kotoko are been trailed 6 points from the submit after Aduana Stars drew 2-2 at home against Real Tamale United. Aduana Stars’ win against RTU would have opened a 8 points gap off the champions.

Aduana now lead 7th place side Kotoko 6 points but the Porcupine Warriors have a game in hand against city rivals King Faisal.

Medeam took an early lead 12′ minutes after Jonathan Sowah head home a ball that had deflected Kotoko defender Mohammed Alhassan.

The visitors doubled the lead in the second half after former Hearts of Oak defender Vincent Atinga converted a penalty. Andrews Appau fouled Derrick Fordjour in the box before Atinga stepped in to sent the ball beyond Frederick Asare.

Medeam have won two straight games booting them in the race for the Ghana Premier League title. The sit fourth place on the table with 3 points below Aduana who lead with 40 points.
