Al Ahly to end interest in Sundowns forward Gaston Sirino amid Mohamed Taher move this summer

Al Ahly are reportedly planning to end interest in Mamelodi Sundowns forward Gaston Sirino and focus on completing a move for Arab Contractors’ attacking midfielder Taher Mohamed Taher.

The Cairo based side have been linked with a move for Mamelodi Sundowns striker Gaston Sirino with the news surfacing after the two meet in this season’s CAF Champions League when Sundowns equipment officer confirmed Ahly’s interest in the Uruguayan International.

This came and still stands against the background that the Egyptian Premier League outfits wants to restore their fading superiority on the African continent having now failed to win the CAF Champions League in seven years and while one of their main competitors Esperance de Tunis have lifted the title on two consecutive seasons.

Signing quality players to strengthen their attacking lines in particular- where they have goalscoring problems- is very essential in Ahly’s quest to conquer Africa again. The bringing in of Senegalese International Aliou Badji in the January transfer window has not worked to perfection for boss Rene Weiler and the Reds knee extending the search for more competent forwards.

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Sirino has already been identified but the PSL side led by manager Pitso Mosimane have told the Egyptian giants that Sirino is simply not for sale at any price amid their African campaign next season, and Brazilian forward extending his Sundowns contract just February this years until June 2025 makes Ahly’s task to secure his signature even more difficult.

Ahly have reportedly ended Sirino’s chase and now shift attention to signing Mohamed Taher from Arab Contractors this summer. The Egyptian champions have opened negotiations with Taher’s club Contractors as revealed by club’s director of football Mohamed Adel.

Arab Contractors are ready to sell their star who helped Egypt qualified for Tokyo Olympic Games- but has been halted due to the global pandemic.

Contractors have placed $5million price tag on the U23 International but could reach a deal with Ahly at a reduced price of EGP 40million (around $3million) in exchange for Taher’s signature according to Kingfut.

Meanwhile, the Reds faces stiffer competition from Esperance de Tunis and other clubs from Europe Mohamed Adel reveals. Taher is currently sidelined due to injury limiting him to only 6 Premier League appearances with just a goal this season against Smouha back in September 2019.
