Kaizer Chiefs new signing Anthony Akumu puts Glamour Boys in same level as European clubs

Kaizer Chiefs new signing Anthony Akumu has labeled the Premier Soccer League leaders as organized as some European clubs.

It is always quite hard to believe that most African clubs are pretty beautiful in terms of organization of arrangements that go on in clubs.

However, Akumu who signed for Kaizer Chiefs in January 2020 has put his latest club in the same level as some clubs in Europe, describing Chiefs as one of the most organized clubs in Africa, and laments his move to the Glamour Boys as ‘a dream come true’.

“It’s a dream come true, to play for one of the best and (most) organized teams in Africa,” Akumu told Nation Sports via Goal.

“At Kaizer Chiefs, everything is organised from training, dressing room to match days. Kaizer Chiefs are at a different level, it’s up there with top clubs in Europe. They treat their players like true professionals.”

Where much was expected from the former Zesco United player, Akumu has not made much impact since his arrival to Kaizer Chiefs due to a sustained injury from previous club Zesco. The 27-year old has promised to bounce back strongly when the PSL season returns from the coronavirus suspension.

“I started very slow but I’m hopeful I’ll pick up when we resume. I get my strength from God. I’m a prayerful man and all my life I’ve been very spiritual. Where I am today it’s because of God. My background also motivates me a lot because many people are looking up to me back home,” continued the towering midfielder.

“It’s a privilege to be here, I’m grateful to everyone who played a part for me to be here. It’s up to me to show what I can give.”

The Kenyan International has also been faced with a huge competition in Chiefs’ midfield where he needs to fight for a starting place against 31-year old George Maluleka, Kearyn Baccus, 28 and Zimbabwean Willard Katsande in Ernst Middendorp’s eleven.

But the defensive midfielder seems not to bother about whatever sort of competition faced at his new club, revealing he has always competed for a position in every team he has played.

“Everywhere I have played there has been competition especially in midfield,” confident Akumu added.

“I believe in healthy competition, if someone is good it will be seen by everyone. It’s about supporting the person who is playing as you work hard and wait for your time.

“I believe everyone in life has got a chance. It’s not about breaking into the first team but using the minutes that you get. You can start a match and perform poorly but you can also come in as a substitute and end up being the hero.”

The former Gor Mahia man ended with his delight to win this year’s PSL title with Kaizer Chiefs as they led the table before the season was halted in March.

“Winning the PSL with Kaizer Chiefs would mean a lot to me because it will be my fifth league title. I hope we can continue our good run in the remaining matches and emerge champions,” concluded the 2013 KPL-winning star.
