Former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Maxwell Owusu Banahene, known for his contribution to Ghana’s U-17 World Cup success in 1999, has been arrested and awaits trial on fraud charges.

Banahene is accused of defrauding a woman and misusing funds, leading to his current custody.

News reports in the local media say Maxwell Owusu Banahene is currently detained in the Kumasi Central Prisons for some time now over the allaegations.

The arrest follows allegations made by a woman who claims that Banahene defrauded her of GH₵6000 (Ghanaian Cedi) by falsely promising assistance with her overseas travel plans.

According to the complainant, she had engaged in online correspondence with Banahene, eventually leading her to transfer the funds into his bank accounts.

Banahene, however, staunchly maintains his innocence throughout the ongoing legal proceedings. Speaking with Crime Check, his mother, Eno Serwaa, revealed that her son vehemently denies any involvement in the alleged fraud, asserting that someone impersonated him.
