FC Samartex coach Annor Walker thinking about remaining four GPL matches amid relegation

FC Samatex are fighting to avoid relegation with four games to the end of the season. Samatex are better than leaders Aduana Stars, Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and Bechem United in the last five Ghana Premier League matches.

They have won three and lost two as the season approaches closure. Walker’s side can escape relegation something the boss is currently thing about along with goal-scoring problems.

The Samreboi-based newly-promoted side were 3-2 winners over Hearts of Oak last weekend in the Ghana Premier League, but coach Annor Walker was unhappy with the performance, citing missed chances as a major concern.

“It’s a worry to me,” Walker told GPL Xpress on TV3. “I’ve not slept. I’m thinking of the rest of the four matches. Because I give myself a target in any team that I take charge of to be among the top six.”

Samartex are currently eighth in the Ghana Premier League standings with 42 points after 30 matches, five points clear of relegation.

Walker believes that his team has the quality to stay up, but they need to start taking their chances.

Samartex have four matches remaining in the season. They face Medeama SC, Legon Cities FC, King Faisal FC, and Tamale City.

At least two wins can save them from falling into the relegation trap. Walker joined Samatex at the beginning of the season. The Ghanaian coach has stated coaching Samatex to be his difficult job.

“When the season started I was with the national team and visited [Samartex] occasionally or when the team has a match, I come to take them through training. So initially we were having suitable but not-so-good results which were manageable,” he told GPL Xpress on 3Sports.

“But the second round has been very difficult for me. I have never faced such hard times in my career and I get worried. [Much more difficult than the Olympics job] because we were assured of winning most of the time at Great Olympics.

“We prepared for the number of goals we would score and not the result even though there were equally difficult fixtures,” he added.

Citing difficulty managing Samatex, Annor Walker has been tipped to leave the Samreboi-based side at the end of the season with Asante Kotoko believed to be interested in Walker.

Walker led Black Galaxies to quarter-finals place in 2023 CHAN in Algeria. His experiences with Black Galaxies and Great Olympics over the years put Walker into the frame of potential candidates for the Kotoko coaching job next term.

Walker will be competition with former Black Stars coaches C.K Akonnor and Akwesi Appiah for the job while former Ghana Premier League winners Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum and Samuel Boadu are in the race as well.
