Former Black Stars duo Ibrahim Tanko and Stephen Appiah set to be appointed as Hearts of Oak coaches

Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak are on the verge of appointing former Black Stars duo Ibrahim Tanko and Stephen Appiah as coaches.

According to reports, Hearts of Oak have reached an agreement with Ibrahim Tanko and Stephen Appiah for their vacant coaching job.

Tanko who led Ghana to a four place in the 2019 AFCON U-23  tournament in Egypt and Appiah who captained the Black Stars to the country’s first FIFA World Cup in 2006 met Hearts’ board chairman Togbe Afedi last weekend to finalize talks for the coaching role.

Tanko is reported to be appointed as the head coach and he would be assisted by the former Stars captain, announcement can be made in few hours.

Tanko is one of the promising coaches in Ghana having served as the assistant coach of Black Stars of Ghana in May 2017 before taking over as the head coach of Ghana national U-23 Men’s team in November 2018.

Tanko headed with Meteor to 2019 African U-23 Cup of Nations in Egypt in attempt to book a place for Ghana in summer’s Olympic Games but failed, only managing a four place when Meteor lost 6-5 to South Africa in what was the last stage Ghana could have qualified for Tokyo.

In January 2020, Tanko was named the head coach of the Black Stars ‘B’ and his on the verge of returning into the Ghana Premier League when he is finally appointed as Hearts of Oak coach.

Appiah was Black Stars technical coordinator and is set to return to his former club as assistant gaffer. If Tanko-Appiah appointment is announced, they will become the permanent replacement for Kim Grant who suffered Hearts’ exit door in December 2019.

Throughout the season, the 2000 and 2004 continental club masters have been led on the interim by Grant’s assistant Edward Odoom where he has placed the Oak tree 9th position on the Premier League table.
