Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey completes £45million move to Arsenal

Arsenal appear to have completed the biggest deal on transfer deadline day, topping Manchester United’s move for Edinson Cavani.

Thomas Partey has officially completed his move to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid after the Gunners met his £45million buyout clause.

The Gunners have already added Willian from Chelsea and Gabriel from Lille, but have finally strengthened their midfield with the signing of the Ghana international.

Arsenal have paid the release clause in midfielder Thomas Partey’s Atletico Madrid contract, the Spanish club have revealed.

Partey’s transfer to Arsenal has left Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone flummoxed.

The Ghanaian midfielder has joined the north London side as the Gunners agreed to pay his £45m release clause.

It is a surprise move from Mikel Arteta after weeks of talks where the fee had been an issue for Arsenal, leaving the Spanish side to plan for life with the 27-year-old.

And Spanish outlet Libertad Digital have reported that has caught Atletico manager Simeone by surprise.

The Argentine was “so sure” that Partey would stay that he has been talking to Lucas Torreira – who is loaned out to the Wanda Metropolitano club in a separate deal – about a midfield pairing.

And it saw the boss mention the Ghanaian in tactical discussions with the outgoing Gunners star, starting the midfielder regularly since the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

With the 27-year-old now completing his £45m move to Arsenal, it has left the Atletico boss ‘very angry’.
