Asante Kotoko claim derby bragging rights after beating Ash Gold 1-0 as Reds climb to Ghana Premier League top spot

Asante Kotoko have climbed back to top of the Ghana Premier League table after a slim victory over Ash Gold at Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.

Kotoko welcomed the Miners to Obuasi in what was the Ashanti Regional derby in week 28 of the Ghana Premier League. Thanks to Gama’s lone goal that hand Kotoko the slim victory as Porcupine’s Ghana Premier League title hopes alive.

Kotoko have grabbed the bragging rights over their Clay-Stadium-shared opponents. Prior to the game, Kotoko had gone three consecutive league games without a win seeing Hearts of Oak overtake them for the Premier League top spot.

However, Fabio Gama’s first half strike get back Kotoko to winning ways in the league. Over last weekend, Kotoko endured a frustrating first half and pip lower side Bekwai Youth Academy in second half of MTN FA Cup 1/64 clash.

The FA Cup win gave Kotoko a first victory in four games but not in Ghana’s top flight league. Having drawn in the last home league game against West African Football Academy, facing Ash Gold this time proved a difficult tie and with Kotoko diminishing in confidence as a results of failure to win recent league matches, was like a story will continue especially at Ash Gold’s own backyard.

However, Kotoko started the game strongly to break their winless curse. The effort paid of in early minutes of the tie when Gama broke the deadlock. The Brazilian run to meet Patrick Asmah’s decent cross from the left flank, where the no. 10 man head home after 23′ minutes into the game.

Kotoko failed to double their tally while Ash Gold couldn’t leveled either as Kotoko now lead the Ghana Premier League table with 50 points as Hearts of Oak sit second with 49 points.

Hearts take on Great Olympics on Sunday evening where avoiding a defeat will move James Boadu’s side back to the top.
