Supporter chairman Christopher Damenya reveals Kotoko plans to catch up with other African elite clubs

National Circles Council Chairman, Christopher Damenya of Asante Kotoko, has given fans words of encouragement after insisting Kotoko will soon be compared with the likes of Al Ahly when it comes to continental football.

The Ghanaian side is considered one of the elite clubs in African football but have fell behind the success ladder in CAF Inter Club competitions where they have failed to lift any CAF club title for the past 37 years whilst its colleague like Ahly and TP Mazembe continue to flourish on the continent.

Al Ahly, Esperance, TP Mazembe and Etoile Sportive du Sahel are among the clubs considered to have good infrastructure for player development, and to support the yearly goals including participating well in the Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Damenya has revealed that the National Circles Council of Kotoko are putting the necessarily things in place to catch up with these clubs and that will make supporters of the Ghanaian giants ‘happy’.

“Kotoko National Circles and the management of the club will soon come out with a concept that will make all Kotoko supporters happy”, Damenya told Otec FM.

“The supporters will understand why they support the club. We will soon come out with that initiative which every supporter will be happy about it.

“I strongly believe every Kotoko supporter will support that concept with a good mind to make it successful because after three to four years, Kotoko will be compared to Al Ahly and other clubs who have their own facilities.”

Kotoko’s last continental glory came against the same opponent compared today after beating the Egyptians 1-0 in the second leg in 1983 at Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Opoku Nti grabbed the match winner or the Porcupine Warriors before they went to another finals against Egyptian opponents Zamalek ten years later. However, Kotoko lost 6-7 on penalties in Cairo, and that is the last time Kotoko reached final of the CAF Champions League.
