Asante Kotoko target from Uganda Mukwala confirms transfer talks

Asante Kotoko transfer target Steven Mukwala has confirms talks with the Ghana Premier League side amid switch from Ugandan Premier League to Ghana’s top flight league.

Mukwala and Kotoko have been linked with each other since early last month but a deal is yet to be finalized but the Ghanaian giants are close to having a breakthrough in the transfer.

It is understood that Kotoko have drew Ugandan side Vipers to the negotiation table but have been unable to convince the Ugandan Premier League outfit about a fee they can pay in exchange for Mukwala’s signature.

On the side of 20-year old himself, Kotoko are reportedly very close to reaching agreement- supposedly a 3-year deal could be struck with the Ugandan International according to sources.

Having asked by Kumasi media over a possible to Asante Kotoko this summer, Mukwala failed to deny ongoing talks with the 2-time Caf Champions League champions but rather confirmed talks.

The 20-year old forward said in an interview with Oyerepa FM that, “For now I can’t say much because we are still negotiating.

“We haven’t finished the deal yet. We are in talks and I hope for the best,” he added.

Mukwala was loaned to another Ugandan Premier League side Maroons FC from Vipers last season but caused many sit-upright-and-take-notice in Ugandan top flight football, running away as East African’s league top scorer with 13 goals 23 Premier League games before the competition was finally cancelled due to .the coronavirus pandemic.

Viper, who led the Ugandan Premier League before its termination, offload Mukwala by former manager Edward Golola at the beginning of last season due to the 20-year old’s ability to convinced Vipers’ technical team led by Fred Kajoba.

Kajoba was thrown at Vipers managerial position in January 2020 after Golola leading Vipers to a humiliating defeat in the hands of Kajjansi United in Ugandan Cup.

It is understood that Kojoba whose contract expires at the end of 2019/2020 season wants Mukwala for next season but the forward welcomes a move to Kotoko.

The Ghana Premier League outfit are hunting heavily for quality players for their 2020/2021 season, and their interest in Mukwala come in a bid to strengthen their already weak striking department since the departure of Songne Yacouba.

Last season, a total of Porcupine Warriors strikers produced only three goals in the cancelled 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League with William Opoku Mensah, Naby Keita and Richard Arthur scoring a goal each while Yacouba failed to score in the season before joining Young Africans.

Since Yacouba’s departure to the Tanzanian giants in August 2020, Kotoko are yet to announce replacement for their former striker despite arrival of Kwame Opoku from lower tier side Nkoranza Warriors.

Kotoko have eyed Asamoah Gyan’s as some whatever a replacement or upgrade on the vacuum created by Yacouba’s departure.

Mukwala has now been targeted in addition to Gyan’s transfer or as alternative to the former Ghana Black Stars captain.
