Asante Kotoko 2-0 Berekum Chelsea: Andy Kumi and Godfred Asiamah strikes send Porcupine Warriors to top of GPL table

Asante Kotoko moved to the summit of the Ghana Premier League table following a 2-0 victory against Berekum Chelsea at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors won the encounter thanks to goals from January signing Andy Kumi and Godfred Asiamah.

Kumi was the first to score when he finished off a brilliant move in the 27th minute connecting home Augustine Okra’s cross from the left flank. It’s was the attacker’s second goal in successive games.

Kotoko had to wait until the 90th minute to double their lead through Asiamah despite dominating proceedings.

Barreto brought in Asiamah for Emmanuel Gyamfi who looked somehow quite on the afternoon but the former struck in stoppage time to seal the victory for Kotoko.

Asiamah took a one-two with Brazilian ace Fabio Gama before rounding off goalkeeper Sammy Adjei to put the game completely beyond the opponents.

Stephen Amankona could have scored the equalizer for Chelsea in the 39th minute after Kotoko goalkeeper Razak Abalora committed a huge blunder but Amankona shot just wide.

After the break, Chelsea should have finally pulled the leveler when Samuel Frimpong brought down Amankona in the box but Bright Amponsah’s penalty went wide over the posts.

Today’s win coach Mariano Barretto second three points in charge of Kotoko. The Portuguese is yet to concede a goal, having won his first game 4-0 against Bechem United last Wednesday.

Kotoko sits top of the league and a point above second-placed Great Olympics who lost at Legon Cities while Chelsea are 12th.
