Ghana beat Sudan 2-0 to make it straight wins in Afcom qualifiers

The Black Stars beat Sudan at the Cape Coast Stadium to make it three-out-of-three in 2022 Afcon qualifiers.

Ghana had already defeated South Africa and Sao Tome & Principe in November 2019 to go top of Group C before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to the African qualifiers.

While welcoming Sudan to the Cape Coast Stadium on Thursday evening, it was a stunning performance that saw Black Stars brush aside Hubert Velud’s men. Andre Ayew struck in each half to give Ghana their first win after resumption of 2022 Afcon qualifiers.

A very swift early attack on the left side saw Tariq Fosu sent in a beautiful cross but the Sudanese shot-stopper Ali Abdellah came in to save the situation.

That was the first Ghana’s attempt on goal while the pressure for the opener continued. However, Sudan were able to stretch Ghana with a no-room-for-operation displays inside 15′ minutes especially in the middle of the park.

While their resilient displays were on point- thus preventing Ghana from creating clear cut chances, they couldn’t hold on longer, falling prey to Andre Ayew’s free kick on the 18′ minute as the Black Stars took the lead.

That came from a nice built-up from deep midfield when Emmanuel Lomotey who was in seemingly unmarked position passed to Samuel Owusu at back of Sudan box, but with somehow, a poor right first touch from the Ghanaian winger, the ball hit hand of Sudan defender for a foul.

Swansea City forward Andre wasted no time to send the ball into the top right corner of the net.

The Sudanese could have leveled just few minutes later when Sudan attacker curler inside the box missed the post by inches.

Ghana doubled their lead in the second half after several moments of entertaining football from both sides. Andre Ayew struck 10′ minutes to full time to make it 2-0 for Ghana.

Today’s victory see Ghana extend their lead on Group C table to 9 points after three straight games, 6 points off second placed South Africa who host Sao Tome & Principe tomorrow evening while Sudan who have been handed a second straight defeat and Sao Tome & Principe share the third and fourth place respectively.
