Juan Carlos Garrido set to sign one year deal with Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel

Tunisian side Etoile Sportive de Sahel is set to appoint Juan Carlos Garrido as the boss of the club on a one year deal, according to Etoile’s spokesperson Qais Ashour.

Etoile du Sahel has been without a substantive coach for some time now after terminating the contract of former Tunisia national team manager Faouzi Benzarti in September 2019.

Faouzi Benzarti departure from Etoile came following the club’s poor run of form between July and September, haven suffered a defeat to rivals Club Sportif Sfaxien in the Tunisian Cup final and a poor show in the league and continental scene, winning only a game in five games.

The aftermath of Benzarti’s exit saw the appointment of Rafik El-Mohamady and Emad Ben Younes as interim bosses of the Sousse based club, but recent tension between the two and Etoile sporting director also led to the two being axed from Etoile in recent days.

This means Etoile needed to fill the big gab left over by Rafik El-Mohamady and Emad Ben Younes after they turned a hard hurdle in the second round of the CAF Champions League against Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko to give Etoile a group stage football in the Champions League.

Though many candidates were tipped for the Etoile job, but is Juan Carlos Garrido who appears the latest favorite for the coaching job. According to Etoile’s spokesperson Qais Ashour, Garrido will sign a one year deal with the Tunisians on Monday.

Should the deal is completed as it’s expected, Garrido would meet his former Chiefs Al Ahly in the CAF Champions group stage at the end of this month, where he led Al Ahly to Egypt Super Cup and CAF Confederations Cup triumph in 2014.

Since leaving Al Ahly in 2015, Garrido had spells at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, Morocco’s Raja Casablanca, and Emirati side Al Ain respectively between 2016 and 2019.
