Asante Kotoko players have finally agreed to accept 40% pay cut amid relieving club from financial distress

With coronavirus being the main predictor of almost all social, economic, political and sporting happenings, particularly in football, making a short term but swift shift from sponsorship generations and gate fees proceeds to pay-cuts as the source of income to ascertain the life span of clubs, Ghana Premier League side Asante Kotoko have seen their players opting to donate 40% of their monthly salary back to the club.

This means every player will only receive 60% of monthly wages, and this development is applied to the technical team led by head coach Maxwell Konadu- who negotiated with players on club’s behalf.

“It is something we initially discussed at management level,” special assistant to club boss Nana Gyambibi Coker told Kumasi FM on Monday.

“We considered our situation and our financial strength in containing our expenses and measures to help sustain the club during the suspension of the league due to Covid-19 and we considered pay-cut as one of the measures.”

“We called the coach and tasked him to engage the players on our behalf and he has reported back to us they have listened to our plea and have accepted a pay cut. “It is a 40% pay-cut and will be implemented soon.”

This is a ad hock measure adopted by many club officials across the globe to sustain the running of clubs in the era of the coronavirus due to its aftermath suspension on football events including the Ghana Premier League.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi based side are already in financial crisis after clearing preventable compensations to former managers Kjetil Zachariassen, C.K Akonnor, and now face FIFA ultimatum to settle North African side Esperance de Tunis $240,000 before next month 10th.

But there expect to be positive news for the Porcupine Warriors over its financial struggles as club chairman Dr. Kwame Kyei is reportedly accepted to clear Esperance over the $240,000 fine by FIFA.

They may also boost from supporters fundraising as reports claim the numerous fan base of Kotoko would want to make financial contribution to clubs officials to run the club, and perhaps, release funds to support the signing of new players.
