Asamoah Gyan sweating over African Cup of Nations success

Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has showed concern over his inability to win the AFCON title with the Black Stars of Ghana despite regarded as the top scorer in the history of the Black Stars.

Gyan has made 7 AFCON and 3 FIFA World Cup appearances since grabbing his debut for the Stars in 2003. The closest Ghana’s goal-machine has ever come in lifting glory in the AFCON competition is the finals in 2010 and 2015 where Black Stars were closely leapfrogged by Egypt and Ivory Coast respectively.

Black Stars’ no.3 shirted man, is one of Ghana’s finest in club football after leaving Liberty Professionals in 2003- finding back of the net 10 times in 16 games in the Ghana Premier League that season before leaving for Udinese and left the Italian outfits in 2008.

His fame in club football came when he signed for Sunderland in the English Premier League between 2010 and 2012, and joined Al Ain in initial loan move in 2011-2012 season, netting 22 goals in less number of matches, 18, and scored 73 goals in 65 games for the United Arab Emirates club between 2012 and 2015.

After scoring 51 international goals in 109 outings for Black Stars, Gyan, 34, is bothered by the fact that he hasn’t lifted the AFCON’s gold medal. The 34-year-old already have in cabinet the bronze and silver medals, and is sweating over not laying hands on the gold.

“For now, what bothers me a lot is I haven’t won any trophy with the Black Stars since 2003”, Gyan told TV3, Ghana.

“I have gotten the bronze medal, I have gotten the silver but I want the gold. That is what has been bothering me till now”.

“That is what I haven’t gotten so far and that is what I want” he stated boldly.

The former Liberty Professionals and Sunderland forward has last represented the Black Stars in 2019 AFCON in Egypt where his hopes of winning the title was hampered by Tunisia in 1/16 of the competition.

He has completely been left out in Ghana’s last two call ups, but still have eyes on returning to the Black Stars. Should he earns a call up, Gyan has revealed a necessary assessment of his fitness would be very key before he can respond to the call up.

“I am still available, anytime I’m given a call up I have to assess my fitness level because playing for the national team is not that easy”, Gyan added.

“I am 34 years, although I still have something in me but I have to feel it in my body…I have to be 100% fit before I can respond to that call up”.

“When I am 100% fit and I am on the field, goal-scoring would not be a problem”, he concluded.

Gyan is African’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup with 6 goals, and began the account in his maiden appearance in 2006 against Czech Republic.

He opened the scores in Black Stars 2-0 victory in the first half before Sulley Muntari struck in the second half to hand Ghana Stars their first ever FIFA World Cup finals victory.
