Rene Weiler on Ahly’s Egyptian Premier League title and throws light on his future

Swiss International Rene Weiler has reacted to Ahly’s Egyptian Premier League triumph and leaves the door quite open on his Ahly future.

Weiler was appointed as Al Ahly boss last year August, changing the fortunes of the African giants within short term of his charge.

The Cairo based side have been splendid in the Egyptian Premier League this season, winning a record 24 games, 4 draws and just a recent defeat to rivals Zamalek while they have now been crowned champions of the local league with 73 points so far.

That’s following Zamalek’s away defeat to Aswan last Friday, seeing Weiler’s side opened a 17-point gab on their rivals, who second on the log, before Ahly even extend their lead to further a point after a home draw game against Misr Lel-Makkasa alst Saturday with six games to end the season.

Weiler was at the bench when his side was forced to their fourth season draw but the results did not bother the Ahly-Swiss trainer, focusing on his side’s latest triumph in the Egyptian top flight football.

The 47-year old reveals Al Ahly’s exclusion of individualism in their campaign this season, stating that “We have always developed further together” in his recent interview with Swiss newspaper Blick.

Weiler was smart in his talk to link his team’s winning of 2019/2021 league title to collective effort.

“And now the ‘team’ have rewarded themselves with winning the title early,” the Swiss added.

Thought Ahly was destined to win the league title, that’s following their first round performance, they looked relatively unimpressive after restart of football from the coronavirus suspension in North African.

Ahly made a sensational perfect start to the Premier League, going 16 straight games without dropping any point.

Their draw 1-1 to Smouha at the Cairo International Stadium on Matchday 17 trapped them of equalizing their best ever league winning record in 15 years ago. The African giants won 17 straight games in the 2004/2005 season.

Weiler’s men thrashed the same opponents 4-0 in a club friendly to make a big statement toward the league restart but the Cairo based side was handed their first league defeat of the season by Zamalek after restart.

And their last two results- all ending in a draw has thrown light on Weiler’s future at Cairo. The manager has remained open about his Ahly future after claiming he will analyze his contract at the end of the current season.

Meanwhile, he has contract until the end of next season where he continues to be linked with Swiss and Belgium clubs. Besides, Zamalek who parted ways with memorizing Patrice Carteron is reportedly having eyes on the Ahly boss.

“I still have a contract until next summer. I’ll analyze everything once at the end of the season,” he added.

Weiler has now added the Egyptian Premier League title to his list of achievements throughout his career, including the Belgian league title and the Belgian Super Cup with Anderlecht.

The Swiss manager also won his second trophy in charge of Al Ahly after claiming the Egypt Super Cup title back in September following a 3-2 victory over Zamalek.
