Chelsea have been backed to sign Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew despite landing Timo Werner. Ayew has flourished for Crystal Palace this season and, now, Desailly thinks he deserves a move to Chelsea.

“It’s time for him [to step up],” the Frenchman told FootballmadeinGhana.

“He’s 28-years-old now and he has reached a very high level, as well as being quite consistent in his performances.

“We need him to have more hunger. We want him to become a killer.

“You can see in his face that he is not really a killer, but he is showing great ability, and being at Chelsea can bring him to the level that we all know that he can get to because he is a very good player.”

Ayew is the highest-scoring Ghanian in the history of the Premier League with 25 goals after finding the net in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

That’s one more than former Leeds United star Anthony Yeboah.

The prospect of Chelsea landing Ayew appears remote, however, with the Blues already securing the signature of Timo Werner.

The Germany international will be moving to Stamford Bridge now that the Bundesliga season is over – abandoning RB Leipzig’s Champions League game in the process.

And Werner recently opened up on that decision, saying: “Of course it hurts me that I can’t help out [RB Leipzig] to play in the Champions League.

“But I’m a Chelsea FC player from July 1st and I’m being paid by Chelsea from then on.

“It was clear that all parties – Chelsea, RB and my side – should and must settle this. Of course I tried to keep out of the Champions League issue as much as I could because it was clear that I would have to hurt one side.

“That’s why my agent finally agreed it with the clubs.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea now want to sign Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell from Bayer Leverkusen and Leicester respectively.

And former Blues star recently expressed a belief that signing Havertz would be a ‘massive statement’ from Lampard’s side.

“You can’t have enough good players,” he told ESPN.

“It would be a statement of intent to go out and get one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

“It does fit with the narrative that Chelsea and Lampard are going down.

“They are looking to sign younger players with sell-on value but who can also produce the goods now.

“If they get Werner, he can play wide or through the middle. Havertz is flexible as well. They may be a little top-heavy, in terms of their forward line.

“But it would be a statement from [Roman] Abramovich to say, ‘we’ve given you Werner and we also want Havertz, one of the brightest talents in European football’.

“That’s a very exciting sign for Chelsea fans.

“But I doubt they will be in that race alone because Havertz is probably on everybody’s radar.”
