Asante Kotoko News: Malik Jabir blasts Kotoko management for not honouring heroes

Former player and manager of Asante Kotoko Malik Jabir has blast Kotoko management for not honoring and drawing old players closer to the club.

The former coach and Club Executive Officer lamented this in responds to the death of Kotoko’s former player Opoku Afriyie who passed away last Sunday.

Jabir held interview with Kumasi based radio station Oyerepa FM, and highlighted his former club doesn’t treat its heroes very well as other clubs do to their old players.

”Clubs elsewhere cherish their former players, brings them near their current players ahead of matches but what do we see with our Kotoko.”

”Kotoko could have done better with Opoku Afriyie especially when he played and also become a team manager and a management member.

”He could have been given a role in the team. They should not think old players of the club want positions when we speak but we want the best for the club.

”I have held all positions in the club, played, was a team manager, coach, CEO and also a board member. Is it a ball boy I want to be? Kotoko should know how to honour their heroes.”

The Ghanaian giants are arguably one of the clubs with respectable heroes in World, African and Ghana football. The Likes of former Black Stars coach Akwesi Appiah, 1983 second CAF African player Opoku Nti- who won them their last CAF Champions League title against Egyptian side Al Ahly, Malik Jabir, 1971 CAF African player of the year Ibrahim Sunday, Robert Mensah (71 second African player of the year), 1978 CAF African player Abdul Karim Razak and one of Ghana’s finest coaches Charles Kumi Gyamfi– who won the AFCON three times- are all past great heroes of the Ghana champions.

In contemporary times, the likes of Charles Taylor, Stephen Oduro, 2002 African Cup Winner’s Cup top scorer Michael Osei, 2008 CAF Confederation top scorer Eric Bekoe, Jordan Opoku, Samuel Nkoom, Harrison Afful, Isaac Vorsah, Hellas Verona midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and former Burkina Faso first choice Soulama Abdula have served and make good name in Kotoko.
