Chelsea break 30-year record at Real Madrid as Jamie Carragher makes prediction

Chelsea news as the Blues go four games without a goal for the first time in 30 years in the 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid

Chelsea suffered their 17th defeat of the season on Wednesday when they fell to a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid. The Champions League holders ran out comfortable winners in Spain thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix both squandered big chances in the first-half before Mason Mount was unfortunate not to grab a consolation in injury-time.

The last time the club failed to score in four straight games was in December 1993 under Glenn Hoddle. Fast forward 30 years and the same problem greets them with a crucial second-leg on the horizon next week.

Former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher doesn’t fancy the Blues’ chances of turning the tie around in London. “I think it is difficult to come back from that, I don’t see them not scoring in the next leg and we know how difficult Chelsea have found it to score all season,” Carragher said after the game.

The ex-Liverpool man’s comments after the clash in Madrid came after he spoke of his initial concerns of Chelsea’s quality in front of goal. Speaking before the clash on CBS Sports Golazo, he said: “The big problem that he’s got, as we saw in his first game, they couldn’t score a goal.

“Not just for Lampard but for Graham Potter this season, the big problem for Chelsea has been scoring goals.”

The game is the 17th time Chelsea have failed to score this season, underlining the necessity of a new forward next season. RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku is set to join in the summer, football.london understands, while the club are said to be considering making Joao Felix’s loan move permanent.
