Chelsea news as Frank Lampard’s men fall to their third defeat in four games in the Champions League quarter-final
Chelsea’s Champions League dreams hang by a thread after they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in a quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.
The Blues failed to score for the fourth successive game for the first time in 30 years in the Spanish capital as Frank Lampard’s side once again struggled in the final third.
Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio handed Los Blancos a vital victory in their bid to retain the title. Chelsea must win by at least two goals next week if they are to qualify for the semi-final.
Benzema’s goal was his 26th of the season for Madrid and his sixth in total against Chelsea. The former France international scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge at the same stage of the competition last season.
The experienced striker was in the right place at the right time to tap the ball home after Kepa Arrizabalaga had initially denied Vinicius Junior from close range. He was unfortunate not to add a second later on when a header sailed over.
After playing his part in Madrid’s win over the Blues, Benzema took to social media to send a message to the West Londoners ahead of next week’s crucial second-leg. Alongside an image of him celebrating his opener, he wrote: “See you in London #alhamdulillah #nueve.”
If Chelsea are going to manage a turnaround next week, they must keep the 35 year-old as quiet as possible. Benzema now has four Champions League goals in his last three appearances and netted twice in his last visit to England against Liverpool.
