Legon Cities FC 1-3 Asante Kotoko, as it happened
It was a beautiful evening at the Accra Sports Stadium as Legon Cities FC welcomed Asante Kotoko to Friday night football in week two of the Ghana Premier League.
Both teams headed into the game with different results from week one of the Premier League. Whereas Kotoko walked into the game with a win, Lego Cities entered with a draw against Liberty Professional last Sunday.
Legon Cities boss Goran Barjaktarevic named a strong eleven on the night, handling former Black Stars first choice goal keeper Fatawu Dauda his debut after the keeper completed a deal with the Cities early this week.
Skipper Jeffrey Degorl, Sadiq Sulley, Abdul Karim, and Papadopoulos were all called into action against the Porcupines.
At the other half, Maxwell Konadu made a change to the side that beat Techiman Eleven Wonders a week ago with Imoro Ibrahim replacing Patrick Yeboah at left back.
The Cities took a flying start. Greece-Ghanaian Papadopoulos broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the start. The goal wouldn’t surprise Kotoko manager as he was expecting a difficult game in early minutes after he admitted he knew very little about his opponents prior to the game.
The home side continued to push for the second goal but any additional goal conceded would make the encounter difficult for the Porcupine Warriors to fight back, and stood firm against attacks incurred by the Cities.
Kotoko warmed themselves into the game 30′ minutes on the clock and drew on level 12’ minutes to the first half. Songne Yacouba pounced on a loose ball inside the Cities half, the Burkina forward played Augustine Okrah through on goal, the latter goes one-on-one with Fatawu Dauda before lofting the ball beyond the Cities keeper to give Kotoko a deserving leveler on the 33’ minute.
Kotoko never stopped piling the pressure as they had taken full control of the game but most of their attacks lack the accurate direction towards goal, ending the first half 1-1.
The Porcupine Warriors continued the second half from where they left, taking the lead for the first time when we have done six minutes to the restart.
Emmanuel Gyamfi capitalized on Suleiman intended back pass to Fatawu Dauda, before the former Wa All Stars winger placed the ball at the bottom left corner on the 51’ minute.
Nine minutes later, lively Emmanuel Gyamfi head home to send Kotoko 3-1 up. Songne Yacouba took on two defenders, he sent in a cross for Emmanuel Gyamfi to head home on the 60’ minute.
Cities could have grabbed their second goal on the night but Felix Anann stood to prevent the home side additional goal with nice saves.
Kotoko later slowed the game with their enticing possessive play but could not register any goal, sealing the clash with a 3-1 emphatic victory over Legon Cities FC on Friday night.
