Jordan Ayew features in Crystal Palace 1-0 victory over Southampton

Ghanaian International Jordan Ayew features in Crystal Palace’s win over Southampton as 2020/2021 season starts in England.

Roy Hudson named a pair of Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha up front against the ‘Saints’ with Townsend, McArthur, McCarthy and Schlupp deployed in midfield.

Crystal Palace took a brighter start to the game after Zaha volleying to put Hudson’s men ahead on the 13th minute at Selhurst Park.

Much was expected of the 29-year old forward given his fine form in Palace’s 14th place finish last season, netting 9 goals in 37 Premier League games along his side’s campaign.

However, the ‘Saints’ defenders contained Ayew for most minutes of the game with Kyle Walker-Peters keeping close eye check on the Black Stars striker’s 90 minutes lasting in the game.

Southampton dominated the game which should have handed them a point in their opening day of the new season but ended up in the lose end.

Meanwhile, Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters was sent off for a high boot on Crystal Palace man Tyrick Mitchell but saw the decision on him overturned by the VAR.

The decision was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee but as part of changes made from last season, things were done differently this time.

As is the case in Europe’s other big referee, the on-pitch referee reviewed the decision using the monitors on the side of the pitch.

After careful deliberation, Jon Moss overturned his original call and Walker-Peters was reprieved with Moss just giving him a yellow card.

Palace’s victory today send them to second position on the log with Arsenal leading on goal difference basis.
