Match Report: WAFA 1-1 Asante Kotoko as it happened, Ghana Premier League 2020/2021

Asante Kotoko forced WAFA to a 1-1 draw at Sogakope after Kwame Opoku striking back at Emmanuel Lomotey’s opener in the first half.

WAFA welcomed Asante Kotoko to a MatchDay 9 fixture in the Ghana Premier League but failed to beat the Kumasi based side in the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope.

WAFA hopes of defeating Kotoko were very high after holding two big factors ahead of today’s game when first remaining unbeaten against Kotoko in the Red Bull Arena, and second, having in hand the leading top scorer in Ghana’s top flight league.

Despite holding these two big things, beating Kotoko were always going to be difficult after the CAF Champions League dropout putting in some impressive displays in their recent league matches, going three straight game without a defeat.

Somehow somewhere in the game, WAFA’s second factor worked but lasted for some minutes as Emmanuel Lomotey struck in the first half to give WAFA a deserving lead but Kwame Opoku leveled in the second half for Kotoko.

With Johnson Smith having a good record against WAFA in Sogakope, the interim boss made three strategic changes to his side that beat Liberty Professionals last Monday in Accra Sports Stadium where Muniru Sulley, Emmanuel Gyamfi and Patrick Asmah replaced Samuel Frimpong, Adom Frimpong and William Opoku Mensah.

Christopher Nettey redrew from advanced right flank to his traditional right-back position while Emmanuel Gyamfi and Patrick Razak were stretched wide to right and left flanks to break WAFA’s wide plays.

Kotoko’s changes and system worked to perfection after preventing WAFA to create chances from wide areas for first 30′ minutes. However, the home side dominated possessions in middle, being forced to open the score from inside the 12 yard box.

After nicely worked move from the edge, Emmanuel Lomotey send it to the far roof to register his 8th Ghana Premeir League goal so far.

WAFA boss would have loved seeing his side double their lead to make fighting back difficult for Kotoko but Kwame Opoku leveled with his sixth goal of the season.

Kotoko next face Ebusua Dwarfs in outstanding league fixture in Cape Coast on Wednesday whiles WAFA face the same Dwarfs next weekend.
