Al Ahly struck twice against Mamelodi Sundown in CAF Champions League quarter-finals to seal semi-finals advantage

Ahly welcomed Mamelodi Sundowns to the Cairo International Stadium for first leg of the 2019-2020 CAF Champions League quarter-finals.

Goals from Ali Maaloul in the second half were enough to hand The Reds semi-final advantage before Weiler’s side travel to South Africa next week.

Downs eliminated Al Ahly form last year’s competition in 5-1 aggregate score line, thrashing the Cairo based 5-0 in South Africa before losing 1-0 in the return leg.

But the Egyptians bounced back strongly in today’s game, Ali Maaloul scored two goals within 12 minutes to ensure Ahly end the first leg of the 2019-2020 Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-0 emphatic win.

The first was when Junior Ajayi held onto Maaloul’s play before sliding a pass back for the left back to finish off into the bottom right corner of the net on the 56th minute.

Twelve minutes later, Maaloul converted a penalty to extend Ahly’s lead. Ahly forward Aliou Badji danced his way through Downs defense before the Senegalese was fouled in the box. Maaloul slotted the ball into the roof of the net to register Ahly’s second goal.

Mamelodi Sundowns had their chances but failed to convert them into goals.
