Zamalek 2020/2021 CAF Champions League opponents revealed after two days of title loss to Al Ahly

Chadian champions Gazelle FC have qualified to face Zamalek in first round of the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League after their opponents didn’t show up.

The Whites had just lost the 2020 CAF Champions League title only two days ago to arch-rivals Al Ahly.

Amr El-Sulya opened the scoring for Al Ahly before Mahmoud Abdel-Razek Shikabala brought the game level after producing a sublime solo effort as Mohamed Magdy Afsha’s late strike sealed the title for the record champions.

Zamalek will have another shot at the missing title from their cabinet since 2002 as they start the new version of the tournament from the first round.

They were drawn against the winner of the clash between Chad’s Gazelle FC and GR/SIAF of Djibouti, however, the latter didn’t show up for the game, which meant that the Chadian side have qualified for the first round.

The first-leg was supposed to take place in N’Djamena, Chad, however, ahead of the game the Djibouti FA sent the CAF a letter, stating that their representatives will not travel without revealing the reasons behind it.

After waiting 45 minutes, the game’s referee blew his whistle, announcing Gazelle FC as the winner of the preliminary round encounter.

Gazelle FC will now face Zamalek in the first round of the competition, with the first-leg set to be played between the 22/23 December in Chad, two weeks before the return-leg in Cairo.

This will now be the first time that Zamalek play against Gazelle, with their last encounter taking place in preliminary round of the 2013 CAF Champions League, when the Whites came out victories 7-0 on aggregate.

Two goals each for Ahmed Gaafar, Mohamed Ibrahim, and Abdoulaye Cissé, and goal to Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan earned Zamalek a 7-0 victory in Alexandria, before both sides played out a 0-0 draw in N’Djamena.

Egypt’s other representative and title holders Al Ahly will await the winner of Niger’s AS SONIDEP and Mogadishu City of Somalia in the first round.
