Inaki Williams stoppage time strike against Barcelona fires Athletico Bilbao into Copa del Rey semis
Barcelona had the opportunity in hand to make a semi-final date in the Spanish Copa del Rey when they came face-to-face with Athletico Bilbao at San Mamés Stadium after seeing their biggest del Rey title contenders Real Madrid eliminated from the competition by Real Sociedad.
Bilbao were unfazed by the favorite tag leveled on Barcelona before kickoff, and really game the Catalans a good run of their money as they stretched Quique Setien men led by their ever messiah Lionel Messi to a goalless draw in the first half.
Resilient in defense and strategic in attack Bilbao had prevented Barcelona from finding the back of the net after restart, that optimistically, pushing the game to a goalless draw when both teams had failed to score after 90’ minutes.
But determination and perseverance pay off, as Bilbao leapfrogged Barcelona in stoppage time when Inaki Williams guided a deft header away from Ter Stegen and into the far corner of the net on 90+3 to book Copa del Rey semi-final place for Athletico Bilbao.
