Sudan appoint Borhan Tia as new head coach after firing Hubert Velud following poor run in FIFA Arab Cup

Sudan has appointed Borhan Tia as new head coach following the firing of Hubert Velud from his managerial position last Sunday.

Velud’s poor form at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar has become a determinant in both coaches career with the French International leaving while Tia comes in for a new head coach role.

The Falcons of Jediane had the worst record in the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, losing all three of their three games while failing to score a single goal and conceding 10.

Drawn in Group C, Sudan first suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Algeria, before being thumped 5-0 by neighbours Egypt and then surprisingly falling to Lebanon 1-0.

Not only this, but they also finished bottom of their World Cup qualifying group with just three points from six games, also failing to win any game in the group that lined up them with Morocco, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea.

They did however make the impossible and managed to qualify for the 2021 AFCON despite being drawn alongside Ghana and South Africa in the qualifiers.

However, the man who guided them to the tournament, Hubert Velud, will not be the one to coach them in Cameroon after being sacked with an immediate effect on Sunday night.

The Frenchman was appointed by the Sudanese FA back in January 2020, guiding the team in 14 games, in which he won only three while losing eight.

Sudan’s new technical staff in the AFCON will be a 100% local-based one, led by veteran head coach Borhan Tia, who will be assisted by Mubark Soliman and Mohsen Sayed.

Tia’s first job will come in the AFCON where the 1970 African champions were drawn in Group D alongside Nigeria, Egypt, and Guinea-Bissau, but a third-placed finish could still them through to the round of 16.
