Former Etoile du Sahel boss Juan Carlos Garrido linked with vacant Egypt U-23 managerial job

Former Al Ahly head coach Juan Carlos Garrido has been reportedly linked with the managerial vacancy at the Egyptian U-23 national team.

Garrido left Al Ahly after the end of the 2014/2015 season, helping the club clinch their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup trophy.

Following his departure, the Spaniard went on to coach several big names in the North African region namely Raja and Wydad Casablanca, Etoile du Sahel, UAE’s Al-Ain and most recently Spain’s CD Castellon.

The 53-year-old was also close to returning to Egypt this season as he started negotiations with Port-Said giants Al Masry, but talks broke down.

According to local reports, Garrido is one of the leading candidates to take charge of Egypt’s U-23 team after holding talks with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA).

The EFA were previously in negotiations with French manager Patrice Beaumelle, who was reportedly close to signing a contract but it seems the deal has fallen through.

Beaumelle took charge of Ivory Coast in 2020 but was sacked after losing to Egypt in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals months ago.
