Basketball: Zamalek reach Basketball Africa League quarter-finals after beating Petro Luanda 85-72

Defending champions Zamalek have reached the quarter-finals of the second edition of the Basketball League (BAL) after convincing 85-72 win against Atlético Petroleos de Luanda in their third game.

A new format was implemented for the second edition of the BAL with the 12 participating teams divided into two conferences of six teams, the Sahara Conference and the Nile Conference.

The Sahara Conference is held in Dakar Arena, in Senegal, while the latter is held in the Hassan Mostafa Sports Hall in Cairo, Egypt.

The top eight teams from both conferences advance to the playoffs, which is a single-elimination tournament

The group phase of the tournament had started for the Sahara Conference last month and the four qualified teams have already been secured.

Meanwhile, the Nile Conference started on April 9th and will continued until the 19th, with the playoffs round taking place in May.

Zamalek are having a great start to their BAL title defending journey, having won all three of their games so far.

The White Knights started their campaign with a comfortable 83-60 win over South Sudan’s Cobra Sports Club.

They were once again victorious in their second game against South African side Cape Town Tigers, this time with a 101-77 scoreline. Their latest win came against Angola’s Atlético Petroleos de Luanda 85-72 on Friday.

This win meant that they secured a spot in the playoff round, despite still having two games to play to determine their standing in the group.

Their upcoming game will be against Congolese side BC Espoir Fukash on 16 April, with their final clash being against Forces Armées et Police of Cameroon three days later.
