Women, public health workers and men need to be aware of breast cancer

Who has to be aware of breast cancer has grown past women only, incorporating men and public health professionals in campaigns against the disease in recent times.

Though it’s women’s disease, their fight and their win but their spouse and health professionals have a big part to play towards these three dimensions. Men can be massagers of the breast and assist their wives to access health care services for the treatment of breast cancer.

Women can not win the battle against breast cancer alone and have received support from global institutions like the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations (UN), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and many other regional, national and community based organizations to help women in defeating the breast cancer disease.

Breast cancer - Symptoms and causes - Mayo Clinic

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer, revealed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Breast cancer accounts for 16% of all female cancers and 22.9% of invasive cancers in women. It is responsible for 18.2% of all cancer deaths worldwide, both male and female.

The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer. The lobules, ducts, and connective tissue are the three main parts that makeup the breast.

The lobules are the glands that produce milk. The ducts are tubes that carry milk to the nipple. The connective tissue (which consists of fibrous and fatty tissue) surrounds and holds everything together. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or lobules.
Breast cancer can start to develop any part of the breast.

There has been change in perception about the disease’s population over the years with breast cancer now able to affect both men though rare and women who are commonly affect.

Breast cancer types

Invasive ductal carcinoma

The cancer cells begin in the ducts and then grow outside the ducts into other parts of the breast tissue. Invasive cancer cells can also spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.

Invasive lobular carcinoma

Cancer cells begin in the lobules and then spread from the lobules to the breast tissues that are close by. These invasive cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body.

Causes of breast cancer

Researchers are not clear of the causes of breast cancer but have identified some factors that may lead to the risk of developing the disease.
These risk factors may interact with one’s genetic makeup and environment to cause breast cancer. While we need to be careful of our health especially about what we eat, we should be aware of the environment.

Researchers have shown that 5 to 10 percent of breast cancer is linked to genetic makeup which is passed through generations of the family.
