Marcus Rashford penalty sink Romania at Riverside as England head into Euro 2020 on back of six successive victories

England will go into Euro 2020 on the back of six successive victories after Marcus Rashford’s penalty earned a 1-0 win over Romania at the Riverside.

The Manchester United winger, given the honour of captaining his country for the first time, stroked home the game’s only goal after Jack Grealish had been brought down.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned a second spot-kick soon after but Jordan Henderson, on as a half-time substitute as he made his return from a three-month layoff, saw his effort denied from 12 yards.

Prior to the goals, both Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho had hit the woodwork, the latter with a header from the impressive James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick.

Gareth Southgate has now had his final chance to see his squad in action ahead of the Euros, but he must still decide which of his standby players to call up in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Marcus Rashford when talking to ITV

On scoring as captain: “It is definitely a great moment for me (being captain). It is something you dream of when you are a kid. Today I accomplished that.”

On Jack Grealish: “Jack is a great player. He will grow and grow in an England shirt. We know what he can do. It is about us all working so that he can realise that potential in an England shirt. We will win more games with him in the team.”
