Alexander Santos: Petro Luanda boss PROUD of stretching Zamalek to draw in first Caf Champions League group stage game

Angola’s Petro Luanda head coach, Alexander Santos, is proud of his team after holding Zamalek to a 2-2 draw in the CAF Champions League.

Zamalek salvaged a last-minute draw against Angola’s Petro Luanda, in their first CAF Champions League group stage game.

The Whites were trailing by two goals after the first-half but managed to comeback in the second-half thanks to goals from Youssef Obama and Mahmoud Hamdy El-Wensh.

Santos is happy that his side showed what they can do on both ends of the pitch and earned a crucial point.

“It was a difficult game against Zamalek. It was an honour to coach this group of players tonight and I’m proud of what we did. Getting a point from Zamalek is a very good thing,” Santos said in the post-match press conference.

“We played a goof match, and no one in Angola expected us to have a two-goal lead in the first-half. Zamalek performed well and wer able to score two goals in the second-half.

“After scoring two goals, we wanted to close the spaces in the second-half, and I refuse to let the players fall to waste time. They would have liked to win the match.

“Even after Zamalek scored the first goal, we performed well and were close to scoring the third goal. I like the way we played today. We showed that we can defend well as well.

“The group is very strong and we will fight to qualify for the next round,” he concluded.

The draw puts Zamalek in third-place in their group after Wydad Casablanca had beat Sagrada Esperança 3-0 in Morocco.

Zamalek will next travel to Angola to face Sagrada on February 19th, while Petro Atletico will host Wydad on the same day.
