Tanzanian club Azam FC announce signing of Ghanaian midfielder James Akaminko on free transfer
Azam Football Club have captured one of the best central midfielders in West Africa after announcing the signing of Ghanaian International James Akaminko on two year deal.
Having featured for Great Olympics in the Ghana Premier League last season, James Akaminko has called it a quit in the Ghanaian top flight with the likes of heavyweights Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Ash Gold and Aduana Stars missing out on the technical midfielder.
Ghanaian midfielder James Akaminko has completed a transfer to Tanzanian top-flight side Azam FC on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old central midfielder has signed a two-year contract with an option to extend for Azam after sealing his move on Thursday after leaving Ghana Premier League side Great Olympics.
The former Tema Youth FC player decided to part ways with Olympics after his contract expired at the end of the 2021-22 season where he played 28 matches and scored two goals with four assists.
Akaminko joined Olympics in February 2021 after a failed move to Tunisian Ligue 1 club US Tataouine in October 2020 despite signing a contract with the club.
He spent two seasons at Ash Gold SC from January 2018 to October 2020 before heading to Tunisia. He has also played for Medeama SC in the Ghanaian top division. During his days at Ash Gold, Akaminko was heavily linked with a move to giants Asante Kotoko after helping local side reach finals of the 2019 WAFU tournament in Senegal.
Akaminko’s sensational display in the tournament caused Kotoko to make advances on the player but failed in the process. Azam will benefit from the signing of the Ghanaian midfielder who appears one of the best deep-lying players in West Africa.
The Tanzanian side who placed 3rd in the just ended season have high hopes of making impact in continental and domestic landscape. With the signing of the Akaminko Azam may be likely to reach group stage of the African Confederation Cup.
