Al Ahly boost chances of qualifying to quarter-finals after 3-1 win over Al Merrihk

A resilient display saw Al Ahly score three goals- from Tau, Sherif and Kader against Al Merrikh despite playing as away side but in their won stadium.

African champions Al Ahly have seized their trail to Mamelodi Sundowns in group A to three points but the PSL side side could still extend the points gab to 6 when they beat Al Hilal on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to this game, Al Ahly’s chances for Caf Champions League quarter-finals was put into narrow basket same as Al Merrikh and Al Hilal whom all three sides had 4 points each.

Al Ahly broke the deadlock 19′ minutes through Percy Tau to send Mosimane’s men to second place on the go. Al Ahly needed to maintain or double their lead to boost the second place but a scary was pulled after Al Merrikh leveling through Ramadan Agab’s equalizer in the second half.

Some minutes later, Al Ahly restored their lead when Mohamed Sherif struck into the net with weaker foot on 72′ minute. Within a minute, Al Merrikh’s attempt to build from the back was a bad move if the Sudanese knew they will concede from that approach.

As Al Merrikh start to build from the back, Ahmed Abdel Kader stole possession in final third, entered the Al Merrikh box before firing low to complete Al Ahly’s 3-1 victory on Friday evening.

The victory send Al Ahly to second place with 7 points as they face Al Hilal Omdurman in their last group stage game.
