Africa champions Al ahly face Al Duhail of Qatar in Quarter final of FIFA Club World Cup with a potential semifinal tie against Beyern Munich
With the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup draw coming off at FIFA headquarters in Zurich on Tuesday afternoon, Al Ahly have finally see their opponents in the competition that starts early next month.
The Egyptian giants who eventually lifted the Caf Champions League will play a quarter final game against Qatar champions Al Duhail on 4th February at the Education City Stadium, another venue for the 2022 World Cup that takes place in Qatar.
The winner of that clash face Bayern Munich at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on 8th for a semifinal clash with the European champions starting their campaign from the last four phase.
Ahly made significant chances to their technical bench in course of last season in bid to solve the uncertainty that faced the Egyptian side getting to the later part of the season after former boss Rene Weiler reportedly have told the Reds hierarchy his willingness to leave Cairo.
Weiler’s department was a threat to Ahly’s two most important competitions in the 2019-2020 season; the Egyptian Premier League and the Caf Champions League.
However, former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Pitso Mosimane replaced Weiler and the South African International with a tricky continental task against Wydad Athletic Club convincingly overcame to the Moroccan Premier League outfit in semifinals of the African Champions League before beating domestic rivals Zamalek to become Africa’s representative for the FIFA Club World Cup.
On the other hand, Al Duhail, whose manager is the former France international Sabri Lamouchi, qualify as the reigning champions of the host nation.
Oceania representatives Auckland City withdrew because of the pandemic and related quarantine measures required by the New Zealand authorities.
That allowed Al Duhail to earn a bye through the first round.
Mexican club Tigres UANL, the CONCACAF Champions League winners, will take on Asian champions Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea on February 4 for the right to take on the South American club competition Copa Libertadores winners in the first semi-final on February 7.
Brazilian clubs Santos and Palmeiras will clash in the delayed South American showpiece at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana on January 30.
The 2020 edition was initially scheduled for December 2020 but was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and because the Copa Libertadores has not yet been completed.
The final will be played at Education City on Thursday, February 11. Liverpool beat Brazil‘s Flamengo 1-0 to win the most recent FIFA Club World Cup that also took place in Qatar, in 2019.
It was the first time Liverpool won the competition and it became only the second English team to lift the trophy after Manchester United in 2008.
